Fibre Processing Class 3
When Processing Fibre many different techniques can be used.
Usually when processing fibre one can always expect a 25 to 40% loss depending on how clean or dirty your fleece is to start.
Processing fibre can start from simple ‘Picking’ this is pulling the fleece bundles apart, either with your fingers, with a picking machine, a simple comb, metal brush, as well as a flick carder to the more specialized carding paddles, drum carders or production combs.
The better you are at processing your fibre the more polish your end result with yarn and the finished product will be for spinning or felting.
Making your own Rolags
When making your own rolags (these come off carding paddles) rovings which can also come from you drum carder. As they first come off they are in Batts then split into rovings and can be great fun to work with. These are used in making a woollen yarn that is light and airy used in most types of knitting also the most common fibre preparation for felting.
Making Tops
The making of Tops involves more work in matching fibre length and keeping the alignment of the fibre parallel this has a greater fibre loss in the preparation, this gives a beautiful fibre for spinning a worsted yarn, the outcome will be smooth and lustrous. Tops are best used in weaving and for those very special lace projects.
