The Difference in Animal Fibre size
Fibre size today is indicated by the micron measurement (one millionth of a metre).
This measurement replaces the old count method. If you buy wool already measured remember the two systems work in opposite ways, the higher the count the finer the wool, where as the lower the micron the finer the wool. By the word finer, we mean the individual strands of fibre/hair
It is important for spinners to recognising the diameter of the fibre.
A reliable measuring system that works for wool, whereby we count the crimp per 2.5cm or 1 inch prior to spinning and plying the fleece so that you end up with the same number of twists giving you an easier way to recognise what can be done with your fleece, remembering the number of crimps is usually a reasonable guide to the fibre size allowing you to make better judgement about craft project suitability for that particular fleece.
